South Melbourne is located 2 kilometers south of the Central Business District of Melbourne. It is an inner suburb and in the area of the City of Port Philip. According to the 2011 Census, it has a population of 9,317.

Previously known as Emerald Hill, it is one of Melbourne’s oldest suburban areas and was one of the first suburbs to adopt full municipal status. It is best known for its well preserved Victorian-era streetscapes.
